The original Shiftlimits website was a flash animation showcase system that was built around a forum for young animators who self-taught together through the use of stick figures. The main website included a section for members of the inhouse team to upload and display their work, as well as a section for any registered member to upload and share their work piecemeal.
This website was one of the earliest web projects I took on, when I was 17-years-old. I had been part of adjacent animation communities for a few years prior to meeting the owner of Shiftlimits. He had started the website with his friends around the original video game Halo and was looking to transition it into animation.
I worked with him to develop his designs into a functional website. We built it around a PhpBB core from version 4 of the website onwards. By late 2008, the community had fragmented and the owner lost interest in the website. I took over ownership and used it as a platform to experiment with ideas I had for a more feature-rich animation community. Eventually, these experiments became the foundation for Hyun’s Dojo.
Shiftlimits closed as an animation community in 2010. In 2020 I began releasing my open source work under the name ShiftLimits.
